What is Incredible Edible?

Incredible Edible started life a few years ago in Todmorden, West Yorkshire where concern for the future and worries about what more severe weather patterns and the rising cost of fuel may mean, inspired a simple idea - using currently unproductive spaces to feed ourselves.

It's all about people getting together with friends and neighbours to make a difference, growing our own healthy local food, reducing our reliance on supermarkets and big business and turning where we live into more vibrant and resilient communities.

It may sound like a big ask but it’s already happening all over the country including here in Wakefield!

From nothing in late 2009, Horbury now has 14 Incredible Edible Community Growing Plots set up by local people getting together in their own time to turn overgrown pieces of land into community allotments with small taster growing plots that anyone can rent to have a go at growing their own food.

Ossett has 8 community growing plots, set up by residents in the same way and we are now running weekly Incredible Edible Community Grow Your Own sessions every Friday and you can Help Us Grow on the first and third Sundays in each month.

Hundreds of people are using the Incredible Edible Wakefield Wild Food Map to find free apples, almonds, blackberries cherries, figs, hazelnuts, loganberries, mulberries, nectarines, pears, plums, raspberries and more growing wild in and around Wakefield.

Every day people are choosing to support their own communities by using the Incredible Edible Wakefield Local Food Directory and Local Food Map to find local food growers and businesses.

Pupils all over the district are learning to grow their own food in Incredible Edible Schools.

Garden centre sales are booming with more garden and allotment owners than ever buying seeds, vegetable plants etc and even those without their own gardens are taking part in our GardenShare scheme, which matches up garden owners with wannabe growers to help them to make use of underused and overgrown growing space.

Then there’s gardening beyond back yards - Guerilla Gardeners armed with trowels, seeds, and vision, digging up roundabouts, planting rhubarb in unused flower beds and throwing "seed bombs" out of their train window to brighten the daily commute.

You'll find Guerilla Garden locations on the IEW Growing Map as well as where to find volunteers, groups, food co-ops, schemes and projects all over the district to join up with if you want to have a go at growing your own food and, if you can’t find anything on the Incredible Edible Wakefield Events page to get involved in then we can help you find land, funds and support to set up your own Community Growing Plots in your neighbourhood.

If you don’t think you have green fingers you can find out What We Do and how you can Be Incredible in other ways by helping out with publicity and organisation or raising funds for Incredible Edible Wakefield.
